Work Permit in Lithuania

Foreigner should obtain work permit before coming to Lithuania. It is issued and can be cancelled by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange. Request for work permission should be reviewed by within two months after the foreigner apply for it.

Work permit can be issued to a foreigner only in case, if good specialist is needed and of there is no such professional in Lithuania. Work permit is issued not longer than for 2 years. Work permit should contain information about the specialty of future worker and the name of the company, where the foreigner intends to work.

If foreigner comes to seasonal work, work permit is issued for a period not longer than 6 months.

If foreigner comes as a trainee or intern, work permit is issued for a period for up to 1 year.

Foreigner does not require work permit if:

• He or she has acquired and registered the company in Lithuania and became its owner and manager;
• A foreign citizen is co-owner of UAB company and his/her part of authorised capital in the company is not less than 50000 litas;

• Foreigner is the manager of the company, the share capital of which is not less than 50,000 litas and the main purpose of his arriving is work in the company;

• A foreign citizen comes to Lithuania for a period up to 3 months per year to solve the questions related to the negotiations, which are necessary for the conclusion and implementation of the contract;
• Foreigner is an employee of foreign legal entity, which is located in a country that is member of World Trade Organization. The condition is that the employee is transferred to the Republic of Lithuania in order to work in a subsidiary, branch or representative office.

Foreigner, who intends to work in Lithuania, should have work experience in the legal institution under the employment contract for at least one year and take a leadership position or he should be an expert with the knowledge, necessary for the company’s activity.

The duration of work of such employee in Lithuania can’t exceed 3 years. This requirement does not apply to an employee who occupies leadership position in the company.
All labor relations are governed by the Labour Code, the laws of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Union.

A work permit is cancelled if:
• Permission was obtained by fraud;
• The employment contract is terminate;
• Residence permit is cancelled.
